Decluttering: Paying for long term storage - Hard Truths

There are some hard truths when it comes to decluttering. Often, it’s hard to hear them. When you’re starting on your journey of finding what’s truly important, you may come across all of the below:

Hard truths:

  1. If you buy “stuff” and then pay to store your stuff, it doesn’t increase its value. You don’t save money. Paying to store items “you’re going to sell” isn’t making you money, your belongings are only worth what people are willing to pay for them.

  2. Your belongings will deteriorate.

  3. The money you spent on storing your items long term is wasted as your items are no longer useable

  4. Pests will infiltrate your special treasures if you have cardboard in your space

  5. Mould, heat and humidity are not kind to your belongings

ways to overcome the above:

  1. Can you replace the item? Is it sentimental and totally irreplaceable?

  2. Can you borrow the item for a short period of time “if the time comes”

  3. Can you source something easy enough when you need it that has the same function?

  4. Is paying for storage truly worth money, time and emotional well-being?
